week 11

Today at Open Channel I started off the day with a bit of a mail out, consisting of about 60 envelopes containing fliers of Open Channel sent out to library's around Melbourne. A quick stroll down to the post office to post them and to buy a few more envelopes. I didn't think it would cost so much to post all those letters it was around $70. Back at Open Channel i started to make up a few more envelopes for the mail out, soon to have some of the fliers run out it was on to my next task for the day. This was a little more hands on, which made me feel a bit more like i was working. I was helping out in building a new lab they are making so that they can have bigger classes. I think it was being called the Octopod, which will end up being some weird 8 sided building made totally out of recycled materials. The wood for the frame was from old buildings, the walls were made out of large cardboard rolls, and there is going to be a pyramid shape on the top with a skylight in it which will most likely be made out or recycled milk bottles and what not. Quite an environmentally friendly structure i must say. Quite the tyring day, but i got to see another side of what happens at Open Channel, which is a good change to the admin side of it. Working at Open Channel i have learnt there is so much more to it than just filming things (which I'm still yet to experience) there is a whole platter of thing to do when working there. I still have one more week to go there which is next Wednesday, and i will only be working from 9 til 1 so i can get to class on time. That will be my last shift there for work placement but i said that i will come in another time to help film a thing they do called Framed, so that i do get a chance to play around with cameras.

week 10

Today is Thursday the 9th of October. I worked at open channel for the day, once again more sort of admin stuff, but its what need to be done if I'm going to build up enough hours to pass the class. Today wasn't all so bad they decided to try out my creative skills, and asked me to have a go at a few designs for the next years flier. I like doing things like that, and if theres any chance that my design was chosen then that's real good for me, to get my work out there, and for them, as they would be getting a design a lot cheaper than usual. They said that is anything i did was chosen they would give me money for it but that's just a bonus, the real payment would be thinking my work is good enough, and seeing it out there. I went down to one of the computer huts to work on the design, they've got all the new i macs set up in numerous little huts which is very nice. There is a nice easy going vibe at open channel, making it a very easy place to work at, weather you doing something you like or just the admin stuff. The people here are really nice and easy to work with, always asking me if i would like to attend little events that are going on, and are very appreciative of the little work that i do. I only need a couple more shifts to get my 40 hours up, and i have discussed with Daniel when good times to come in are, and i can pretty much come in any during the week. I thought i was going to struggle with getting enough hours considering such a slow start, but it looks like everything will turn out alright.

week9/ holidays

No work was done in week 9 but i got in touch with Daniel at open chanell and organised to come in a day during the holidays. On wednaes day the 1st i worked for 5 hours at open chanell, there was not much to do as Nathan was there aswell, i did a bit of admin sort of stuff such as going through a big folder and finding anything to do with jobs in the video industry and flaging each section, it reminded me of an offace job like in sinefeld when george gets the Penski file. It was rather boreing but i understand that there is always going to be that side to a job. I sat in on a lecture from a first assistant director Brendon Campbell (i think), it was rather interesting as i did not realise how many different types of directors jobs there are, and that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd assistant directors do completly different things to a director. The job of a first assistant director sounds really hard as they need to know so much stuff about what is going on in the movie and need to plan out every little thing. Im thinking twice about following this path as a career, but it is still a good experience, and im still to see what its like to help out with production.

week8

no work at open chanell this week.
